“Cancer, Macrobiotics & Me”
With Michael Rossoff
Many leaders and long-time teachers of macrobiotics have had cancer. Most have died. They were fine people, overwhelmed by their condition. I want to share my story of cancer which was diagnosed in 2019. I will explain a very personal story about how I diagnosed my cancer before my doctor would believe me. After several tests, the diagnosis was Kidney cancer. I was advised to have the kidney removed quickly to avoid any metastases. I will explain why I agreed to have this major surgery and what happened since then, which included that the cancer spread anyway.
I'll share my reflections of the key factors that caused my cancer.
>> my family history of cancer and how genetics may have had a roll
>> my lifestyle that contributed significantly
>> lessons I learned and changes I've made over the years since then.
I'll also take a broader look at why so many people have "left" macrobiotics and why some of the long-time believers hold rigidly to their view that the macrobiotic diet should prevent all diseases, including cancer.
Whatever remains of this movement will only revitalize by reconciling with its past. There is so much "barefoot doctor" understanding from Chinese medicine that, if utilized, can widen and deepen the macrobiotic approach to healing. This is why I continue teaching and counseling, but not the 1980s rigid views and false beliefs.
In essence, macrobiotic teaching needs to stand on a spiritual foundation about life, health, healing, disease and death. The world can benefit from our important understanding of balance, respect for nature, power of food in life and how to live a simpler life.
I dedicate my talk to my dear friend Ginat Rice, who always encouraged me to become a better teacher and healer. May her memory be a blessing.
