What is Macrobiotics?
Macrobiotics is a simple, natural approach for creating a healthy life. By addressing the central importance of daily eating, we can begin to regain control of our lives. Food is basic to life and life depends on our relationship to nature that has brought forth these foods. So our eating needs to be adjusted by season of the year, where we live, the type of work we do and more.
For best health, the majority of our foods needs to be vegetable quality. Macrobiotics gives an emphasis to whole grains, such as brown rice, millet, quinoa, barley and others. A wide variety of seasonal vegetables should be eaten daily along with vegetable quality protein such as beans, tempeh, tofu, nuts and seeds. Macrobiotics stresses the importance and art of cooking as a crucial link between food and healthy nutrition. Also, fermented foods like miso and pickles are vital for good health. Animal foods like fish and poultry and eggs may be incorporated by those who desire or need these animal foods. Other forms of animal meats are avoided for best health. Macrobiotics seeks an intuitive balance between foods that contract and foods that expand our bodies. For example, salt contracts and sugars expands. By paying attention to this fundamental concept, we can find a simpler balance in our overall life, instead of feeling compulsions and extreme cravings. Foods heal, so healing is bite-by-bite and meal-by-meal and day-by-day and soon our blood is changing and then the cells, tissues and organs. Our natural body wisdom knows what and where it is troubled and will undertake healing as it strengthens. Along the way, the body must cleanse itself of toxins and congestions which have accumulated over many years. This too is part of our healing. |
